The Assembly and the increased participation of the civic sector in the development of democracy

In 2007 the UN General Assembly declared 15 September as International Day of Democracy. This year the Assembly of the Republic of Macedonia marked the day for the second time with a series of events.

The central event was the round table dedicated to the topic: “Increased Participation of the civic sector in the legislative and control role of the Assembly”.

Representatives of the civic sector, experts and MPs took part in the open and fruitful debate on the current developments concerning the participation of the NGOs in the work of the Assembly. The possibilities for increased participation of the civic sector in the legislative and control role of the Assembly were also discussed, in accordance with the letter and spirit of the newly adopted Law on the Assembly.

In the concluding remarks the moderator of the round table, the Member of Parliament Ms. Cventanka Ivanova, emphasized the expectations for the NGOs to have a more active role in the process of adoption of laws, beginning from the stage of drafting the laws, through the control role, up to their implementation.

The participants expressed their commitment and support to the public debates organized in the Assembly, as an important element in the development and promotion of democracy.
