MEETING BETWEEN PRESIDENT XHAFERI AND THE PRESIDENT OF THE REPUBLIC OF SLOVENIA, PAHOR

The President of the Assembly of the Republic of North Macedonia, Talat Xhaferi, met today with the President of the Republic of Slovenia, H.E. Borut Pahor.

President Xhaferi expressed satisfaction at holding today’s meeting with a statesman who comes from a friendly country and promoter of our Euro-Atlantic integration. The intensity of bilateral meetings at all levels is just another confirmation of the excellent bilateral relations that have been built and nurtured for years. He thanked for the support in key moments from our recent history, especially in times of crisis when Slovenia offered its help by sending teams to our southern border to deal with the refugee crisis and currently, with a medical team and protective equipment to deal with the pandemic caused by COVID-19.

President Xhaferi welcomed Pahor's initiative for the Brdo-Brioni process and the vision for stabilization of the region through regional cooperation, as a step towards its integration into the European Union, as well as for the letter sent by Mr. Pahor in March this year to the President of the European Council, Mr. Charles Michel, with a request to start negotiations with the Republic of North Macedonia and the Republic of Albania. As the 30th NATO member state and a country that expects the formal start of EU membership negotiations, the country and its institutions are ready to respond appropriately in accordance with the undertaken obligations, Xhaferi concluded.

President Pahor expressed gratitude for the opportunity to exchange views and address the MPs in the Assembly of the Republic of North Macedonia, as an expression of friendship and building alliances, especially in difficult and unpredictable times. He praised the previous government's statehood wisdom and the parliamentary majority for overcoming sensitive and difficult bilateral issues with neighbours. At the same time, he wished success to President Xhaferi during his term and in the forthcoming strategic decision making, which, as he said, will require greater social unification. The Republic of Slovenia will continue to support you on the path to full membership in the European Union, and there should be no unfair conditions that might hinder the process, Pahor concluded.
