The Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE) is to create a new “Partner for democracy” status for the parliaments of countries neighbouring the Council of Europe area – provided they agree to work towards the Organisation’s values such as free elections and abolition of the death penalty.

PRESIDENT OF THE ASSEMBLY, MR. TRAJKO VELJANOSKI RECEIVED MR. MIROSLAV LAJCAK, MINISTER OF FOREIGN AFFAIRS OF THE SLOVAK REPUBLIC

President Veljanoski expressed satisfaction that the Slovak Republic is upgrading its diplomatic office in the Republic of Macedonia to the level of an Embassy, which is, stressed President Veljanoski, a demonstration of the positive trend in the bilateral relations between the Republic of Macedonia and the Slovak Republic, and in that context of the good cooperation between the two Parliaments. Speaking of the Macedonia's strategic goals - integration in the European and Euro-Atlantic structures, the President of the Assembly underlined that despite the well-known events in Bucharest, Macedonia continues its active participation in the peace missions throughout the world, as it feels responsibility for the world peace as an indivisible category.

Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe supports Macedonia in its accession to the European Union.During the friendly and open meeting, the President of the Assembly Mr. Trajko Veljanoski stressed that it was the Council of Europe through which the Republic of Macedonia began its integration in the Euro-Atlantic structures. 'At the same time, it was with the embrace and implementation of the Council of Europe standards and principles - human rights, democracy, rule of law and peace - that we started our reforms undertaken primarily for the sake of our citizens, because it is the only way to ensure political and economic stability and growth', said President Veljanoski.

THE FUTURE OF THE REPUBLIC OF MACEDONIA IS IN THE EUROPEAN UNION

The Vice-President of the National Council for EU Integration, Mrs. Silvana Boneva, and the members of the National Council met with the President of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe, Mr. Lluis Maria De Puig. At the meeting, the President of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe, Mr. Lluis Maria De Puig, was informed about the activities of the National Council for EU Integration. Also, the guest was informed about the successful implementation of the reforms in the Republic of Macedonia in the expectation of receiving the date for opening the negotiations for accession into the European Union and visa liberalization.

PRESIDENT OF THE ASSEMBLY, MR. TRAJKO VELJANOSKI RECEIVED THE NEWLY APPOINTED AMBASSADOR OF THE PORTUGUESE REPUBLIC, H.E. MR. LUIS DE ALMEIDA SAMPAIO

President Veljanoski expressed hope that Macedonia and Portugal will soon open their resident embassies as a step forward in enhancing the political and economic cooperation between the two countries. He introduced the Ambassador Sampaio to the political situation in the Republic of Macedonia, the reforms undertaken by the country in the direction of our integration in the NATO and EU, the broad support of the Macedonian citizens for the Euro-Atlantic aspirations of the country, as well as the expectations that the country will get visa liberalisation and a date for starting the negotiations with the EU. President Veljanoski expressed interest in enhancing the parliamentary cooperation between Macedonia and Portugal at all levels.

PRESIDENT OF THE ASSEMBLY, MR. TRAJKO VELJANOSKI, RECEIVED THE CHAIRPERSON OF THE EUROPEAN AFFAIRS COMMITTEE OF THE CROATIAN PARLIAMENT, MR. NEVEN MIMICA

During the meeting, the highly developed relations between the two countries were once again confirmed, including the relations between the two parliaments. Particular emphasis was made to the European orientation of the two countries, and the role of the Parliaments in the EU integration. President Veljanoski stressed the importance of the regional cooperation in the Euro-Atlantic integration process. While recalling that one project of that nature was the accession to the NATO of the countries of the Adriatic Group, he mentioned the fact that although having fulfilled the required criteria, Macedonia has not joined Croatia and Albania into NATO due to the absurd name problem imposed by our neighbour. Therefore he underlined that international principles and standards have to be respected in the integration processes. 'Nevertheless', said President Veljanoski, 'we remain faithful to our Euro-Atlantic commitment, because we are doing the reforms for us, for our citizens, and we expect that the European institutions will accordingly assess our accomplishments'.
