38TH MEETING OF THE COMMITTEE ON EUROPEAN ISSUES
The Committee on European Issues of the Assembly of the Republic of Macedonia, on its meeting held on 11 January 2010, reviewed the Draft-law on Amending the Law on Inland Navigation (first reading) and the Draft-law on Veterinary - Medical Materials (first reading). With 6 votes “for” and 1 “against” the Committee concluded that the Law on Inland Navigation is acceptable and should proceed to further reading.

Nikiforos Diamanduros- European Ombudsman until 2014

The European Parliament re-elected Mr. Nikiforos Diamanduros from Greece for European Ombudsman until 2014, who holds this position since 2003. Mr. Nikiforos Diamanduros was supported by 340 MEP on yesterday’s secret voting. Other two nominees for this position were Mr. Pierre-Yves Monette (BE) who was supported by 289 votes and Vittorio Bottoli (IT) with 19 votes.

Meeting of the President of the Assembly of the Republic of Macedonia, Mr. Trajko Veljanoski with Lord George Foulkes from the House of Lords of the United Kingdom Parliament, and Mr. Mark Versallion, Member of the Conservative Party

In the framework of the activities for realization of the joint project of the Assembly of the Republic of Macedonia and the Westminster Foundation for Democracy, the President of the Assembly of the Republic of Macedonia, Mr. Trajko Veljanoski, had a cordial meeting with Lord George Foulkes, Member of the House of Lords of the UK Parliament, and Mr. Mark Versallion, Treasurer of the Foreign Affairs Forum of the Conservative Party. They exchanged opinions on the realization of the joint project of the Assembly of the Republic of Macedonia and the Westminster Foundation for Democracy for strengthening the overall capacities of the Assembly of the Republic of Macedonia and agenda of the joint activities for the future period. Both sides expressed their pleasure with the results of this project.

The President of the Assembly of the Republic of Macedonia, Mr. Trajko Veljanoski had a meeting with the Federal Minister for European and International Affairs of Austria, Dr. Michael Spindelegger. At the meeting the President of the Assembly of the Republic of Macedonia, Mr. Trajko Veljanoski expressed his pleasure for the visit of the Austrian Minister and underlined the support from the Republic of Austria for our European integration, and said that the Republic of Macedonia is prepared to continue with the reforms on the EU agenda, as well as to continue the negotiations with Greece in order to find a mutually acceptable solution for the name issue.

Address by the President of the Assembly of the Republic of Macedonia, Mr. Trajko Veljanoski on the occasion of the European Holocaust Remeberance Day

I believe that every one present here today, when we are marking the 65th Anniversary of the liberation of the Auschwitz-Birkenau, the voiceless symbol of the Holocaust, is wondering why this happened. Why over 6 million people, women, children and seniors were killed in a most brutal manner, only because they were Jews. And God teaches that regardless of our religion we are God’s Creations and we are all equal. This issue should not and must not be limited as personal issue, this is our common issue; and our common obligation is to remember the Holocaust and to preserve the historic memory for this event. Even more important for us is to prevent creation of any condition for repetition of the Holocaust regardless who the victim is, since this is the greatest evil of the history of humanity

56 MEP voted “for”, 5 MEP- “restrained” and 5 MEP- ”against” the amendments on the Report for Republic of Macedonia , submitted by the Slovenian MEP and Rapporteur Mr. Zoran Thaler. The amendments request Macedonia to receive a date on opening the accession negotiations with EU in March 2010

Habib Chawki Hamtaoui. The President of the Assembly of the Republic of Macedonia, Mr. Trajko Veljanoski had a meeting the newly appointed and authorized Ambassador from the Republic of India. H.E. Diavyabh Manchanda. The president Veljanoski underlined the need of strengthening the cooperation with a important and friendly country as India and expressed his preparedness as a President of the Assembly of the Republic of Macedonia to assist the intensification of the parliamentary cooperation.
Mother Teresa is another connection between Macedonia and India, she was born in Skopje, and lived and worked in India, and today is the Anniversary of the Memorial House of Mother Teresa in Skopje, underlined the President Veljanoski.
